A huge problem we face within our communities is the lack of interpersonal or group communication between our neighbors. Neighbors that grow relationships between one another and come to find their fellow neighbors as acquaintances or friends will support their neighbors. A study done by college students showed that simply by communicating with a neighbor even once starts somewhat of a relationship and that neighbor will then be more likely to watch out for you and your things. The study was a done by finding various groups of people sitting on the beach and having a woman come sit next to them. The woman would place her things down and either start a conversation with the group or simply lay down and then proceed to leave without her belongings. Shortly after she leaves, a man would quickly walk by and swoop up her i-Pod. Those of whom she had started a conversation with would get up and stop the man, whereas those groups of people she hadn't started talking to did nothing but look away even though they witnessed the robbery and were aware her belonging was being stolen. |
