The war in Iraq was unnecessary because there was no weapons of mass destruction. Many American lives were cost due to Iraq and the United States did not gain anything. 
The United States did not have a complete win in the Vietnam and Gulf Wars and cost many American lives just for the sake of defeating communism. The United States did not gain anything as well.
