Multipath & Multisourced Issue1 #120148
| (added May 1st) From David Alman in the STW LI group UN question: "Systemic Action Research: A strategy for whole system change" by Danny Burns. "one of the problems with contemporary organisations is that they try to impose change without reference to the characters, the embedded cultures, the narratives that went before... because the new has not been woven into the old they appear disconnected from reality". I think there is a message here on gaining acceptance for new ideas where some might wish instead to "impose" their views on others regarding SEE sustainability. Parallel development > multiple story lines open up possibilities for action that may not have appeared if just one path had been opened up; > multiple tracks prove to be mutually re-enforcing even though they appear to be contradictory; > multiple perspectives and approaches ensure higher quality of work and sustained motivation across the spectrum of activities, because people focused on what they were good at and what they were passionate about. Resonance Resonance may be a more useful concept than representativeness for both identifying issues of concern and possibilities for mobilisation. Resonance means: > people "see" and "feel" the connection between things; > they "know" that it is related to their experience; > they are "energised" and motivated. Effective sense making and sustainable change within complex systems will be dependent on "improvisational change strategies". ************ Each of us and all of us, have a role to play, each with our diverse talents, sensitivities, passions and energies to achieve better futures... Takes multiple paths and accommodates seemingly opposite concepts and paradoxes, an embodiment of multiple "ways to be and do" in awareness of interdependence that creates a convergence. An API to enable the whole to thrive on diversity inter-operatively and synergistically, to help us become what we would seek to become individually and collectively and to put Shirky's connective surplus to work! Something that would help us identify gaps and needs and leverage the resources and under utilized capacities of the whole network according to our own aspirations and affinities. Something that would help us plug into or onto it's individual entities, and into the richness and substance that they contribute to the whole, what lies "in between" and constitutes the cognitive surplus? Shirky:"It's precisely when no one has any idea how to deploy something, until people start experimenting with it and finding their way through to new ways of using this, that the surplus gets integrated and in the course of the integration it transforms society. We're in the early phase, the phase I think we are still in and it's all special cases. The physics of participation is much more like the physics of weather than it is like the physics of gravity. We know all the forces that combine to make these kinds of things work: there's an interesting community over here there's an interesting sharing model over there, those people are collaborating on open source software. But despite knowing the input we can't predict the output yet because there's so much complexity. So the way we explore complex ecosystems is you just try lots and lots and lots of things and you hope that everybody who fails fails informatively so that you can at least find a skull on the pikestaff near where you are going and that's the phase we are in now." |

Our times should be, like the Renaissance and even more, the opportunity for a general reframing of the problematiques. Everything must be rethought, everything must be started.
Everything has actually already started but without us knowing it. We are at the stage of modest preliminaries, invisible, marginal, dispersed… On each continent and in each nation one can find creative bubbling, a multitude of political initiatives in the direction of economic, social, political, cognitive, educational, ethical or existential regeneration. But everything that must be connected is yet dispersed, compartmented, separated. These initiatives are not aware of each other, no institution enumerates them, no one is familiar with them. They are nonetheless the live stock for the future. And it is a matter now of recognizing, aggregating, enlisting them in order to open up transformational paths. These multiple paths developing in conjunction will intermesh to form a new Path which will decompose into the paths each of us will follow and which will guide us toward the still invisible and unconceivable metamorphosis. |
