This basic idea was original put forward in the late 19th century by Boltzmann and his colleague Schuetz and is consequently known as the Boltzmann-Schuetz hypothesis. Boltzmann and Schuetz were unaware of modern Big Ban cosmology and consequently the age of the universe - and hence the scope for improbable events such as entropy fluctuations within this timeframe. However modern variants of the idea appeal to inflationary cosmology and the multiverse to overcome this defect. |
