Important for £££ Companies engage with society as part of tech dev.
In many product areas, not just technology, companies do not understand the potential concerns of society and 'build social capital' in their product and company. This is about understanding and acting on concerns, building relationships & considering wider views.
Potential case studies

Unilever Ice Cream - asked Sustainability consultancy to engage with stakeholders to understand concerns about new ice cream.  Details unclear, product unclear. May be a good positive case study of engagement whether the product went ahead or not.

Nalco & BP oil spill - concerns widely expressed in media about risks of use of this dispersant and little communication about benefits, risks, science behind it.  If they had engaged earlier, communicated better about the testing and fate of their product in the environment the company would have come out of that exercise stronger and more successful.

Engagement is often seen as a barrier to development, of slowing down the process.  It actually may not, it could speed up the process.  If it does in fact slow things a little, this actually may be to the medium term benefit of the company.
