Public/stakeholder eng to understand concerns, perceptions, key issues
Engagement with the public, government, ngos, perhaps academics/social scientists to help clarify and understand the issues which may arise from the use of the material or product and evaluate their view of the proposed benefits of its use.
Early stage engagement is or particular importance to responsible development, but also to eventual acceptance of the material or product.

It will lead to greater understanding of the concerns, issues and perceptions which may shape acceptance and clarify views of how different stakeholders perceive the benefit of the initiative.

If it is a particularly innovative area, dialogue with regulators very early in the process will help clarify regulatory and governance expectations and likely developments.

Engagement is two way, usually resulting in improved understanding from both parties.  It also indicates that those engaged can genuinely influence the development of the material or product.

This type of engagement is usually undertaken confidentially, particularly if IP issues are important.

This will contribute to Principle 2 of the Responsible Nano Code on Stakeholder Relationships and Principle 5 on wider social, environmental, health and ethical issues

Question for stakeholders:

Is it enough that this is done and reported. What evidence of engagement do you think is reasonable to make public, what may be available as part of ongoing dialogue?

How can confidentiality be assured in this type of engagement?
