On decision to begin research using nanotechnology
Sometimes there may be a strategic decision to 'get into nano', or it may be an evolution of an existing process or material. It may be that to scientists involved it is a small, incremental step on a research pathway, but may bring with it new uncertainties & risks which need to be considered.
There are a number of potential ways in which companies may begin to use nanoscale technologies.  These   may bring new risks or hazards or at the least uncertainties.  This may entail new worker safety requirements, HSE testing and other interactions in various parts of the company.

The strategic decision to begin use nanotechnologies in what ever form requires communications to various departments at a senior level.  The Responsible Nano Code requires that a decision to use nanotechnology should rest with the board or a senior committee answering to the board.

Internal engagement is important to ensure those involved at key points in the development of a material or product are aware of this strategic decision and its implication for their role.   These areas may include worker safety, research, legal or insurance departments, government relations and policy and external  communications,

External engagement may be advisable with stakeholders, eg insurers, regulators, even NGOs to understand the impact of this decision on the way the company handles its research, manufacturing and marketing.

This will help fulfil the criteria for Principle 1 of The Responsible Nano Code indicates.
