An earlier seminal study con- ducted in the 1990s indicated that 90%–95% of the U.S. gen- eral population are theists, in comparison to 30%–40% of mental health professionals.21 This finding mirrors wider trends suggesting that socioeconomic elites in the West- ern world are more likely to be atheistic than the general population.22 A study conducted by Lee Dye found that 31 percent of the scientists she surveyed do not believe in God while another 31 percent of the scientists said that they do not know if their is a God and have no way to prove it. These scientists are some of the smartest people in America, they are the ones who study the way the world is and how it works. They have concluded that there is no scientific evidence for God therefore there is no reason to believe in one. A link to the survey was sent to all students at Oxford University in November 2007. 32.9% chose the ‘atheist’ option and 24.4% chose the ‘agnostic’ option, resulting in a combined total of 57.3%.
