Connectionist objection to Tye's theory
Einwand
1
#942
Theory's flawed by its classical conception of memory as storage. Memory isn't stored in a classical representational manner, but is reactivated in a connectionist dispositional fashion, based on the strength of connections between processing nodes.
Argument anticipated by Michael Tye, 1991.

No: computers can't understand images [5b]âComputers cant think because they cant use images in the way that people do. Computers can only deal with formal symbolic information.â59C6EF

Images represented by filled cells in an arrayâCells in a matrix inside a machineâs memory function as if they were arranged in a visual array. Images correspond to filled cells within such an array. Array-based sensory patterns are interpreted by higher-level systems. âEF597B

Images are interpreted symbol-filled arraysâImages are 2-and-one-half dimensional arrays of symbols that encode two-dimensional information about physical surfaces along with viewer-centered information, such as a depth and relative orientation of surface features.â98CE71

Connectionism doesn't accommodate all evidence
Connectionism doesn't accommodate all evidenceâEvidence suggests that image generation is a constructive process that draws on separate packets of information stored in long-term memory. The connectionist dispositional theory lacks an account of how those packets can be stored discreetly.âEF597B

Tye's imagery can accommodate connectionist memoryâThe theory doesnt require that images be stored representationally. The discrete parcels of information contained in images may be stored in a connectionist dispositional system.âEF597B
