Stages of Learning
Information
1
#661408
There are five stages of learning: novice, beginner, competence, proficiency, and expertise. While learners in an adult educational program may be considered competent, proficient, or an expert in their current field, they must realize that they will back at the novice or beginner stage of learning in the educational program. If a learner is unable to accept this or not willing to learn, practice, and work their way back up to expert level in this new field, they will not be as successful.
Dreyfus, H. L., Dreyfus, S. E., & Athanasiou, T. (1986). Mind over machine : the power of human intuition and expertise in the era of the computer. Oxford, UK: B. Blackwell.

Final Educational Philosophy by Kelly DykeâThis final educational philosophy describes my approach to education from the perspective of an adult learner. My finalized approach is sorted into three categories based on what I have learned this semester: (1) Theories of Learning; (2) The Learnerâs Experience; and (3) Considerations for Instructors. 1. Theories of Learning
1. Theories of LearningâThis section describes theories of learning that I believe are most applicable to adults pursuing an educational program, such as graduate school or professional development courses. Before starting a program, learners should reflect on why they are interested in pursuing an educational program and if they are prepared for the commitment. Application of these theories will assist with that reflection process. Click on each of the green bubbles to learn more. â9FDDBE
