3. Why are path dependencies important?
Path dependencies create lock-in effects which can be a problem in light of unforeseen future developments that require a different path to be taken. Decisions made today can have long-lasting (and sometimes unintended) consequences for the future.
At the same time it needs to be noted that path dependencies are not necessarily negative. Lock-in effects create certainty which allows people to plan better. A society where multiple paths are constantly open can be unstable.

Example: Decisions about the German railroad system made about 150 years ago still shape mobility patterns today and have implications about where people choose to live and how cities develop.
