1. What is a path dependency?
Paths are possible development trajectories of a system. A path dependency means that going down one path makes it more difficult to switch to another path. Path dependency narrows down the viable options and creates lock-in effects which make it more difficult to change paths. Past decisions add up to foreclose some options and make others more likely to be taken.

Path dependencies arise along the following dimensions:

  • Technlogical developments and infrastructure (Technology)
  • Production and market penetration (Economy)
  • Governance and Regulation (Politics)
  • User practices (Culture)
  • Discourse
