3. Visions for future urban mobility Thema1 #493334 Diverging visions for future urban mobility resulted from diverging understandings of the purpose of urban mobility systems |
Different visions of the future of urban mobility were formulated in the Trialog. - Some approached the question of future urban mobility in light of the German energy transition, i.e. urban mobility that reduces CO2 emissions. The focus here is constainted predominantly on the transport vehicles themselves and their carbon footprint.
- Other participants appealed for conceptualizing the future of urban mobility from a user-centered perspective (rather than technology perspective) where mobility is a means to an end. The goal is to enable people to get quickly from point A to point B.
- Yet, others emphasized a concept of urban mobility that prioritizes improved quality of life through altogether less traffic, shorter distances, or converting parking lots and streets into green areas or public spaces for social interaction and relaxation.
- Finally, several participants pointed out that it is important to keep in mind that urban mobility influences the composition of cities. Urban mobility is not just about the means of transportation but also about urban planning and the development of cities themselves (Stadtentwicklung). Therefore, urban mobility should be conceptualized in light of social justice so that cities do not develop into clean, safe and rich inner circles vs poor, unsafe and polluted outskirts. Similarly, urban mobility means access to job opportunities, schools, family and friends, etc., and so it should be conceptualized keeping in mind how it advanages or disadvantages certain groups and how it shapes the makeup of city neighborhoods.
