WHO recommendations on sugar consumption
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends (2015) that both adults and children limit their intake of added sugar to less than 10% of total daily calories; with conditional guidance to keep added sugar below 5% of daily calories (i.e. 6 teaspoons – 25 grams – per day for a 2,000-calorie diet).
  • WHO recommends a reduced intake of free sugars throughout the lifecourse (strong recommendation).
  • In both adults and children, WHO recommends reducing the intake of free sugars to less than 10% of total energy intake (strong recommendation).
  • WHO suggests a further reduction of the intake of free sugars to below 5% of
    total energy intake (conditional recommendation).
