The 1990s was the only decade in 70 years when Argentina did not have export barriers. Since then export taxes have been increasing but they have now stabilised at high levels. Export taxes represent the third largest source of revenue for the Argentinean treasury after income tax and VAT. Export controls were found to have significant negative effects on producer prices and agricultural output, although it is difficult to assess their cost to the country.
