Frameworks for early warning signals of emerging infectious diseases.

  • Speaker: Jude Dzevela Kong, York University, Junling Ma, University of Victoria
  • Date and Time: Tuesday, October 12, 2021 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm
  • Location: Online
  • Abstract: Recent pandemics such as the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), the Zika virus, avian influenza A (H7N9), the novel coronavirus Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV), Ebola and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV), accentuate the dire need for an effective framework that can be used to provide Canadian public health policy makers with early warning signals (EWS) for emerging infectious diseases (EID). In this talk we will present some of the frameworks that have been designed to provide EWS for EID. We will also present the work by Mathematics for Public Health Modelling Network that builds on these frameworks to develop an accurate framework for Canadian public health policy makers.
  • Dr. Jude Kong is a Professor at York University Canada and the founding Director of the Africa-Canada Artificial Intelligence and Data Innovation Consortium (ACADIC). He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Mathematics for Public Health (MfPH) Network, where he co-direct the Early Warning System for Emerging Infectious Diseases Theme. Dr. Kong is an expert in artificial intelligence, data science, infectious disease modelling and mathematics education. In 2020, he won a York Research Leader Award.
  • Dr. Ma is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Victoria, Canada. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Mathematics for Public Health (MfPH) Network, where he co-direct the Early Warning System for Emerging Infectious Diseases Theme. Dr. Ma is an expert in mathematical modelling of the spread of infectious diseases, optimal control strategies, and their interaction with viral evolution; modelling the spread process on random networks.
