Total mass and space used

The less mass used in a product, the less energy to make it and to use it over a life cycle. Energy intensity of that mass is important. (For instance, "Why move 2 tons of vehicle to carry 100 pounds of human?") Selecting and integrating materials for effective use of mass is no trivial decision.
