Shanty towns proliferate
People in impoverished regions have been pouring into cities, huge mega cities. One can estimate the numbers. Examples: Dacca, Kinshasa, Mumbai, Cairo, Karachi, Jakarta, Lagos. The worry: If these cities cannot add services for them, this trend will lead to ungovernable cities or failed states.
A tendency in the West is to analyze these situations as potential breeding grounds for terrorism -- and they could be. Actually remediating these messes to enable the down-and-out to build a better quality of life for themselves will take more unconventional thinking than all the world's NGOs have been able to muster so far.
