02.2016 Putting mapping back in the News.

February 5 2016

Two points:

1. Newspapers used to be maps. They were spatially laid out and the position on the page of different stories indicated relevant importance. Other clues were found in font size and position within the paper. That mapping function of the newspapers has been lost in the rush to social media as the entry point for news. Individual stories appear in the stream and each is given equal weight. News has failed in making the cat video as important as the latest arms talks. It's time to return to the map.

2. With infinite amounts of space in cyberspace (as near as makes no odds), social media networks, and easier access to social media networks via mobile phones, we are drowning in reporting *even on the important stuff*.

DebateGraph can be used as a news mapping system. It returns the spatial design element to the news ... and more. It provides a quick overview, it provides a deep dive. It can cross-link and use time as part of the story. See the 21st Century Challenges Map: dgraph.org/ainm. DebateGraph uses different views for different tasks: Page View is its answer to the requirements of the mobile market.

The News market urgently needs a second generation news mapping service.
