Government tests highlighted reliability concerns
Government tests on a sample of 10,000 volunteers, including more than 1,000 disabled volunteers, raised significant concerns about the reliability of facial scans, iris scans and fingerprints (see expanded text for details).
The Government trials in 2005 involved 10,000 volunteers, with the detailed research focusing on 2,000 "quota" people chosen to match the general population and 750 disabled people.
- Facial scans worked for only 69% of the quota group and 48% of disabled volunteers.
- Fingerprints worked for 81% of quota group and 80% of disabled people.
- Iris scans worked for 96% of "quota" volunteers and 91% of the disabled group.
