Maria Gabriela de Lemos Pereira Beato became the first woman to complete a PhD at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon, in February of 1927, with a thesis entitled “Glucose Determination in the Blood”. After obtaining such degree, she graduated in Medicine.
In 1936, she was the head of the Urology Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.

Foi a primeira mulher a concluir o doutoramento na Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Fármacia, em Fevereiro de 1927, com tese "Doseamento da glicose no sangue". Depois da obtenção deste grau, matriculou se em Medicina, onde concluiu a licenciatura. Em 1936 era chefe do Laboratório de Urologia da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa.
