Statistical rules, and what mysteriously doesn't follow them.

One of the main things that doesn't "follow the rules" in either some big or little way is any individual instance of the natural phenomena the rules are about. In some cases you can learn tremendous amounts from carefully studying the individual instance, including the discovery of important limitations or changes needed in "the rules".
