Notes

Tim: In LA for Denise's 150th birthday

entire family! father 80 years, son 20 years, Denise 50 birthday

Tatyana, Denise, Bill, Mei Lin, Tim -

Continuiing work on Electronic Health Record - launch in 6 months time

Brian - reading things written by people on this call - Tim's material on systems approach to education. Mei lin's article on Trading Posts article. Reading and writing.

Jonathan - OMEGA - conf call with gov officials, people from Australia - Adelaide - very excited about Omega - sustainability context - we answer a lot of the quetions they are posing. Workshop to discuss OMEGA - with State Minister from South Australia - perfect location in Adelaide. Jim Laski

Invited to Japan to talk at Digital Earth Conference happening in conjnction with UNESCO sustainability - Opening Keynote - in 5th year

China - getting visa to go China, Taiwan, then Sept Australia, Oct - NY, Nov - Japan

Denise - let's talk offline about China

Taiphoon in Taiwan last week - slowed down gov connections

Denise - I have higher level Taiwan connections - Neil Sperling with 1 dozen yellow roses - he wants to work with Denise - want to introuce her to high level people bulding a new city in China

Mei Lin introduced Sean Masaki Flynn, author of Economics for Dummies, to Jonathan and invited him to Denise's birthday party.

Tammy - Has been working on developing a nonprofit.  Convoforgood.org - to have conversations between people switching careers and a good listening ear - conversations will be recorded for study to make process better in 30 minutes - have developer on board, getting things set up - please check out the website

  • Suggestion to cut Franchise for Humanity weekly calls from 1 hour to to 30 minutes - as a trading post.

Denise - we are all ramping up on a number of amazing projects - we could shift potential focus - can be 30 minutes or last 30 minutes of the call

I don't care what I do or where I am, I will make a point to be on the call - with the number of great people, its too rushed - trying to feed 10 horses with 30 minute -

Brian - 30 minutes would be so rushed - what's the point?

Brian - closing comment has been challenging.

Denise - closing comment original intent was 1 word - and then it morphed into something else

Could stay with 1 word - or the 1 thing they are going to do that week

Sandy - keep everything shorter and go to Debategraph to get updates - so if people want to learn more about

Worked with John Mattison and Mei Lin - "healthy communities collaborative" The "Unclinic" or Clinic 3.0 - different ways to incorporate a health focus instead of disease management focus for healthcare - Mei Lin has hooked me in - to incorporate the "Human Element" as oppossed to current weighting on clinical metrics - to understand what is underneath it

Brian and Kennan's Public University stuff - what's happening there

Mei Lin - Sandy has been working on disruptive innovation. Clayton Christensen Look at the jobs that needs to be done. Sandy's experience is going into Microsoft, categorizing jobs that needs to be done. Shifted Microsoft to ride the wave of disruptive innovation. Mei Lin is pulling Sandy to health. Get young people to categorize what jobs needs to be done.

Sandy - Take everything we learned to help companies like Dell and Microsoft to identify the jobs that needs to be done. Using that to help California Health Corp and other organizations by using the same process to break down what the needs are. Action oriented. How do we obesity rate, try to manage the weight, understanding the impact on body (under that there's jobs), needs of dietians trying to help (more jobs), understand the ecosystem to identify the needs, broad landscape, quantify that. Localized down to the community level to address the specific needs to make a real difference.

Mei Lin - Thank you Bill for being a terrific friend for all of us.

Kennan - 3 things:

1. Linda Staheli approached Victor Hwang with GIS and American Association for Advancement of Science - back to back - moving ahead - Victor is meeting with Tiffany i/c of AAAS - today - emerging an interesting challenge and huge opportuity - AAAS is making a major pivot - annual meeting in Silicn Valley to get innovation figured out - Silicon Valley is looking at "what can we get from basic sicnece?" Its a breakdown in viion and focus - create a cross over event between GIS and AAAS - in development - an intersting proposition

2. Allina Healthcare systems - as part of Yamana Sceicne and Technology - 3rd space event and F2F - interactive dialog to see cross overs and open concerns - don't know what the cross over will be. One board member is a hospital adminstrator, a medical school studentand someone from the Director's office at the National Institutes of Health

3. With Brie at the Zen Retreat - Jukoji started by Steve Job's Master - Buddhist Geek had a workshop - Kickstarter campaign that started it - very interesting crossover - beautiful hike with Brie - "more people are killed by deer than by bears"

Brian Donohue - Jack Park, Mei Lin, Dan Desmond and Laleh - the Legal Committee of CHC -

Brian - Public Universities as Social Catalysts.

Met with Cindy Beck Cal-HOSA state advisor - incoming president of HOSA - Health Occupation Students of America - where Mei Lin was a judge at 8400 person conference in Florida. How to leverage California-Health-MRC and HOSA and Rotary International to come together and touch young people's lives with the concepts of health - a historic and exciting meeting

Denise - my non profit, Wings of Love - will go to do a health fiar in Kenya - to bring students and have them do it as a project - we have prominent US doctors on the team - will get airfares computers and technology - a safe place - where Obama's mother has supported the UFUNGUO community development - Kenya -

Also working with Corstone - Steve Leventhal - reached out toDenise as publicist - team up with Indian PR firm - all dots will be conneted in Kenya next year.

Mei Lin - What Sandy mentioned is relavant to OMEGA. And how Jonathan thinks of Omega and creating jobs.

Jim Caldwell - spent two days on China's global impact with bay area teachers.  Balancing economic development and environmental sustainability.  Enlightening workshop, teachers gave it rave reviews.  About 80 ppl, 45 were middle school and HS teachers, plus people from Stanford.  Organized by the 1990 Institute.  Jim is Founding DIrector (since 1990 :o).  THe children's art project was overseen by the 1990 Institute.  Took around to museums and Art centers around the US for two years from 2001 to 2002.

Denise - would like to introduce Jim to Mark Rafter.  He just brought over some of the most famous artists in China to the US.

Jim was at China National Children's Center in September, talking about how to do further outreach.  Like getting back to 'Children's Art and the Environment' project (above).

Brian - Public Universities: Getting critiques back, ready for final edit which will go to HBR, of everything learned from last 16 years.

Jim's notes

Kennan suggested this link to capture them: http://meetingwords.com/ep/pad/view/IXKnElrBiA/rev.3330

That works!  Thank you Kennan!

Here are my personal notes from the meeting for comparison:

Jonathan Trent went to a Digital Earth Conference in Japan. There he learned about a new city in China that may have some potential for OMEGA.  (I didn’t catch which of the many new cities he learned about.)

Denise  talked about a City in China as well, but couldn’t hear what city. Mei Lin introduced Sean Masaki Flynn to her and they will work together. He is the author of Economics for Dummies, a textbook.

Tammy: NGO website is up: www.combo?forgood.com and combo?forgood.org I couldn’t understand it.

She proposed changing the meeting to a half hour. After debate it was decided that members should feel free to drop out after a  half hour if they have other pressing matters.  They can always review the notes later.

Sandra: Healthy Communities — Health care.

Need to incorporate the human element, not just clinical.

Disruptive Innovation: need to look at what needs doing, not just what has been done.

Categorize new items where innovation is needed.

Microsoft, Bell Labs, etc. are working with her to implement this.

California Health Corps is an example.

Sandy: Health Care: I didn’t hear what she said.

Kennan: AAAS Association for the Advancement of Science: Victor Tiffany

There is a new opportunity to reframe their mission toward innovation.

Some talk of working on the basis for planned communities.

(I am very excited about this, as I am working on Urban Planning for sustainable communities both in China and globally.  Meeting of the Minds conference will be held in Detroit this year to continue the international collaboration around building resilient, sustainable cities. Gordon Feller, CISCO, and his daughter Jessie Feller are the main organizers:  www.cityminded.org)

Kennan went on to describe a plan to have a Crossover Retreat at the end of the AAAS Meeting this year, to build bridges across disciplines to inspire innovation and identify where the opportunities lie.

(this fits well with the work I am doing at the 1990 Institute, training teachers on the issues of “Balancing Economic Development and Environmental Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities for China’s New Leadership” which is the title of the workshop I helped coordinate for the 1990 Institute August 4-5, 2014.) More info is available on our website: www.1990institute.org

Brian Donahue: California Health Corp.

They met as a legal committee and ironed out the legal issues of forming the organization.

Then Cindy Beck, CA Education Staff was a very enthusiastic and helpful contributor to the plan.

Denise: going to Kenya for a health fair. USUNGO? and CORSTONE? are collaborating

Jim Caldwell discussed the 1990 Institute Workshop for Teachers on China’s Growing Global Impact, mentioned above.

Also, in response to question from Mei Lin, described the Children’s Art and the Environment Project (CAEP) of the 1990 Institute which was gathered the art work of 1mm Chinese children ages 5-15 on the environment, held a contest and brought 100 of their paintings on a tour of US museums and art galleries for two years.  The follow on project for that was the annual International Mural Painting Festival for Children at the Beijing CNCC (China National Children’s Center).

We discussed ways to collaborate with other organizations to continue children’s art work on the environment.  We will talk more about linking other organizations to move this forward.

Thee 1990 Institute is following up with a new annual video contest called “Youth Voices on China” which begins in the fall of 2014. The goal is for U.S. High School and College Students to find ways to exchange perspectives work together with Chinese counterparts to help solve global problems.
