Use a dimensional approach

Here's another way to think about it.

I don't believe in categories either and it is certainly possible to devise and use a dimensional approach to psychiatric diagnosis. For health insurance, you could use something like a pain scale and the person could rate her/his level of distress (1 for none, 10 for unbearable) and then there could be loci of distress (primary relationships, self-esteem, thought patterns).
