Sandy Bates @F4H2014
Sandra M. Bates, author of "The Social Innovation Imperative," gives the keynote at Franchise for Humanity, Stanford University, on Feb 20, 2014.
In addressing the topic of 'Reaping Abundance' ~ the cycle of harvesting ~ Sandy talks about the key role of Participatory Design, which incorporates ownership and responsibility. If one is to reap abundance, we have to think about cycles. To have any impact, think of a journey that lasts for years and generations.
Sandy's example of Plumpy'nut, manufactured by a corporation (Nutriset), took into account all stake-holders in the equation, including the malnourished children it is designed for, the mothers that care for those children, the medical workers, farmers, manufacturers, and supply chain. Social innovation is a process and methodology that facilitates sustainability, for long-term impact, and also allows the next innovation to learn from the previous processes developed.
The producer of Plumpy'nut (Nutriset) met the needs of ALL of the stake-holders, and identified constraints that inhibited meeting those needs... including lack of available clean water, refrigeration, difficulty in storing bulky items, and transportation.
She shares about how for-profit corporations can be the source of future social innovation - a process for ideas and solutions to drive change and create social value.
