Models are caricatures of reality; this must be carefully communicated

Scientific models are simply caricatures of reality and this needs to be carefully communicated. At the same time, models offer a transparent description of complex systems and can be used to facilitate discussions. Models will help to provide a quantitative approach but this should be undertaken in parallel with public debate and the outcomes fed back into the modelling process.
