A religious art sculptor, disciple of Barata Feyo, Maria Amélia Carvalheira was born on the 5th of September of 1904, in Gondarém, Vila Nova de Cerveira.
The most significant part of her oeuvre - of which The angel and the three young shepherds, in Loca do Cabeço, comprise her most iconic piece - can be found in Fátima. The images of Our Lady of Fátima and Crucified Jesus, in the Chapel of the Sisters of Presentation, of St. Dominic embracing the foot of the Cross, in the Chapel of the Dominicans, as well as a four meters wide bas-relief representing the Beatified Nuno Álvares Pereira, in the House of Beato Nuno, are also highlights of her vast body of work.
Moreover, Carvalheira da Silva executed the bas-reliefs of the 15 Hungarian Stone Stations of the Cross – having completed the last Stone already at the age of 88 - the marble image of Our Lady of Hungary, holding the crown of St. Stephen, and the bust of Father Cruz.
She received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal from the Vatican, in 1988, and was distinguished as a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Portuguese Republic, in 1992.
At the centenary of her birth, the Cardinal Patriarch presided, in Fátima, over a tribute session to Carvalheira da Silva, following the inauguration of an exhibition devoted to the theme “Fátima – Pilgrimage with the Hands”, at the Paul the Sixth Center.
She died in Lisbon, where she lived, on the 31st of December of 1998.

Maria Amélia Carvalheira nasceu a 5 de Setembro de 1904 em Gondarém, Vila Nova de Cerveira. Escultora de arte sacra, discípula de Barata Feyo, tem em Fátima a parte mais significativa da sua obra, da qual a mais emblemática é O anjo e os três pastorinhos, na Loca do Cabeço.
São também de sua autoria as imagens de Nossa Senhora de Fátima e de Jesus Crucificado, na Capela das Irmãs da Apresentação, a de S. Domingos abraçado aos pés da cruz com Cristo Crucificado, na Capela das Dominicanas, e um baixo-relevo com quatro metros representando o Beato Nuno Álvares Pereira, na Casa do Beato Nuno. Foi ainda Carvalheira da Silva quem executou os baixos-relevos das 15 estações de pedra da Via-Sacra Húngara, a última das quais quando já tinha 88 anos de idade, e a imagem de mármore de Nossa Senhora, Padroeira da Hungria, com a coroa de Santo Estêvão. É também a autora do busto do Padre Cruz.
Em 1988 recebeu a condecoração "Pro Ecclesia et Pontífice" da Santa Sé e em 1992 o Grau de Comendadora da Ordem de Mérito da República Portuguesa.
No centenário do seu nascimento o Cardeal Patriarca presidiu em Fátima a uma sessão de homenagem, depois de inaugurar uma exposição subordinada ao tema “Fátima – Peregrinar com as mãos”, no Centro Paulo VI.
Faleceu em Lisboa, onde residia, em 31 de Dezembro de 1998.
