Food consumption data in Nigeria

Data on food consumption in Nigeria is sparse. The main source of data is the NFCNS 2002.

  • The main source of data on the nature of food consumption can be drawn from the NFCNS. Otherwise there is a dearth of national surveys providing data sets that can be sued for analysis of food and nutrition security in rural Nigeria.
  • The NFCNS did assess dietary diversity and these techniques could be repeated at state level in addition to some in depth small scale surveys to examine intra household food consumption. Many studies are carried out without including information on per capita consumption, food distribution and availability at the household level.
  • Protein intake of children in the North Western zone is low because their diet is mainly cereal-based with no supplementation.
