Responding to the double burden in China

Policy measures taken in China to counter the significant double burden of obesity and under-nutrition as dietary patterns shift in the population.















Official statistics convey the scale of the emerging epidemic of obesity and obesity-related chronic diseases in China, with 7.1% (60m) of the population obese in 2002.

Obesity-related chronic disease in China:
  • Diabetes: 2.6% 20 million
  • Hypertension: 18.8% 160 million
  • Dyslipidemia: 18.6% 160 million
    • Hypercholesterolemia: 2.9%
    • Hypertriglyceridemia: 11.9%
    • Low high-density lipoprotein hyperlipidemia:7.4%.
