WORKSHOP 7

Security

The trust and security pillar of the Digital Agenda for Europe aims at enhancing cyber security preparedness, combating cyber-crime and cyber attacks, ensuring data protection and safer internet for children. Building on this, the upcoming European Strategy for Internet Security to be adopted in the third quarter of 2012 aims at ensuring and promoting an open, transparent, secure and resilient global digital ecosystem benefitting EU citizens, businesses and public administrations. The strategy will propose measures, including regulatory ones, to ensure a closer cooperation and information exchange between EU public and private stakeholders. It will also aim to stimulate private sector efforts to improve security in products and services through the development of appropriate incentives, as well as to put in place appropriate framework conditions for promoting the development of a vibrant EU ICT security industry. Opportunities and funding schemes encouraging the deployment of appropriate technological solutions, which respond both to present and future security challenges, will be further put forward in Horizon 2020 and theConnecting Europe Facility.

The workshop will identify priorities and actions needed in the field of Internet Security in Europe, global challenges of Internet security and how to address them from a European perspective, the role of ICT security innovation in the European digital economy and how to further stimulate it.

In the context of policy development it will address the issues of:

  • Internet security as a growth stimulator and how to foster innovation in the European ICT security industry and promote research results in trustworthy ICT so that they are widely adopted across the digital single market.
  • Role and responsibilities of key stakeholders in building a European approach to Internet security.
  • Global dimension of Internet security and the EU response in this context.
