Biodiversity conservation must be expanded to tackle the root causes of loss, while at the same time meeting societal needs—a principle recognized explicitly in the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011–2020 agreed at the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
