Global extinctions

The target set at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 to halt the decline of biodiversity by the end of 2010 has not been achieved. About 1/3 of the more than 50,000 species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List remain threatened to some degree.

Traditional varieties of crops, vegetables and domestic animals are also disappearing fast.
