Others' empathy is the basis for a right to life

Few people assert that animals in general have a right to life, though many oppose inflicting suffering. What sets humans apart from the animals we farm is that due to our intellect and ability to communicate, we are aware if someone is killed, and empathy and/or fear create suffering.
