1897: First Zionist Congress meets in Basle

Inspired by Theodor Herzl's book Der Judenstaat (1896), and in response gowing anti-Semitism in Europe, the First Zionest Congress initiated the Basle Programme to establish a "home for the Jewish people in Palestine secured by public law".
