15 May 1948: Arab armies attack newly-declared state of Israel

Arab armies from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria invaded the state of Israel but were repelled. Subsequent Armistices established Israel's territorial boundaries over around 21% of British Mandate Palestine. Jordan annexed East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Egypt held the Gaza Strip.
