Mission
The mission of the Waterberg Biosphere
The mission of the WBR is:
- To build a conservation and sustainable-use ethic, by establishing and facilitating the implementation of a code of good practice which can then be effectively monitored
- To promote appropriate and sustainable development, ensuring that the wilderness character and conservation value of the Waterberg as an important water catchment, natural resource and nature based tourism destination is retained to the benefit of its people
- To actively spread benefits and opportunities to poorer members of the community
- To facilitate relevant research, education and skills training in the area.
It is hoped that the WBR will form an important part of the South African conservation effort and network of conservation initiatives, and will therefore contribute towards the sustainable preservation of biodiversity.
The inclusion of priority conservation areas within this programme is expected to earn WBR recognition for its significant contribution towards international, national, regional and local conservation efforts. Key requirements to achieve such success include that the WBR must be guided by a functional, well-funded and staffed organisation that plays a positive role in seeking to achieve the WBR’s stated goals and objectives.
