Criminals deter from killing b/c of the death penalty

Criminals who have committed an offense punishable by life imprisonment, when faced with capture, refrained from killing their captor though by killing, escape seemed more probable. When asked why they refrain from homicide quick responses indicated a willingness to serve life sentence, but not risk the death penalty
