A96: European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS)

Member States should fulfil their obligations under the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) deployment plan, in particular as regards the lines due to be equipped by 2015.

What is the problem? Inefficient transport and mobility

Increased traffic on roads, railways, sky, sea and waterways is causing more and more infrastructure bottlenecks. Intelligent Transports Systems (ITS) could make transport more efficient, faster, easier and reliable. New information and communication technology (ICT) solutions like real-time traffic and travel information could relieve congestion, encourage greener mobility, improve safety and security, and better integrate passenger and freight transport.

Why is EU action necessary? Boost efficient cross-border transport services

The European Rail Traffic Management System aims at a Europe wide automatic speed control system, while ICT applications for rail freight services and passenger services will support cross-border services.

What will the European Commission do?

Until end 2012

  • The acknowledgment of a single technical basis of the system specifications – for all railway lines equipped with ERTMS in the EU until 2012
  • An agreement on the timeline for the development of the next ERTMS, which is foreseen to be legalised in 2012
