| Children aren't taught what they should and shouldn't eat. SupportiveArgument1 #117339 Since they aren't taught what to eat and what not to eat, they don't have an understanding of what is healthy for them and what is unhealthy leading some children to obesity. |

| Excerpt / Summary "Many young persons in the United States do not follow the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans or the Food Guide Pyramid. On average, children and adolescents consume too much fat, saturated fat, and sodium and not enough fruits, vegetables, or calcium (44,126-129; CDC, unpublished data). Children and adolescents obtain 33%-35% of their calories from fat and 12%-13% from saturated fat (above the recommended levels of 30% and 10%, respectively) (44,128,129). Only 16% of children ages 6-11 years and 15% of adolescents ages 12-19 years meet the recommendation for total fat intake; only 9% of children and 7% of adolescents meet the recommendation for saturated fat intake (130). Almost one-half of 8th- and 10th-grade students eat three or more snacks a day, and most of these snacks are high in fat, sugar, or sodium (45)." |
