Extended deterrence
The threat of a nuclear-strategic response in response to a nuclear attack on allied territories or troops. Through extended deterrence, also known as a "nuclear umbrella", countries allied with a nuclear weapon state hope to deter or avoid nuclear attack or threat from other countries.
